In the early years when the first church was built (1871) people would walk to church and many would be there by 9:30. Songs were sung for about 15 minutes until the rest were present for Sunday School.  The enjoyment of singing down through the years became a tradition at Salem.  Many singing groups emerged from this early beginning.  A measure of musical talent was always evident.
